TOKU MAHI NA KARINA

My name is Karina and my favorite colour is blue.  I like to dance and sing and play with my friends.  I also like to have sleep overs oh and I forgot to mention I like to eat alot too.   My goal for this year is to get quicker at my maths.

TURANGAWAEWAE FESTIVAL

Why do we have a Turangawaewae festival ?

1. To celebrate different cultures in our school.

2. To raise money for our school to make our school a better place.

What I enjoyed about the festival ?

1. The bouncy  castle.

2. The yummy food.

FANTAILS

Fantails live in the forest but they also live on the lowlands around farms and houses.  The maori name for a fantail is Piwakawaka. They only live for about three years which isn't that long.   Fantails are able to eat insects while flying in the air unlike other birds which have to land and then eat.  It is common for fantails to follow humans.  Some people think it is because they are friendly but it is mostly because when we walk we mix all the dirt around and that annoys the insects underneath so the birds come and eat all the bugs.   Fantails can flit around buy using its wings and big tail.

Falcons

The maori name for a falcon is Karearea.  The falcon is the fastest bird in New Zealand.  A falcon is half the size of a hawk.  The falcon is the only New Zealand bird of prey.  Falcons can fly at 240 km per hour.  They also catch their prey while flying.

BOOK WEEK

We have book week to encourage children to read books and to use the library.

During the week we did a Stop Drop and Read every day.  Other teachers came and read to us.

On parade day we all dressed up in our Book Character costumes and paraded around the town.

We thank Becky for organizing it for us.

 TREASURE ISLAND 

This story starts in the Admiral Benbow, an inn. Jim Hawkins (played by Quin) works there. Billy bones (played by Shanti ) comes to stay. He has a map. He was once a pirate, a member of Captain Flint's crew. He is visited by Black Dog (Stevie )who fights him. Then the evil Blind Pew (Sasha ) comes and scares him to death.

Jim gets the map . He gets the Goodies, Dr Livesey (Charley) Squire Trelawney ( Sarah), Mr Dance ( Shannen) and they hire a ship called the Hispaniola. The captain is Captain Smollett (Makayla ) who gets Long John Silver (Madison ) to collect a crew. He is evil and one of Captain Flint's  pirates. He collects all the other pirates and away they sail.  On the trip Jim hears of a plot to kill them.

When they get to the island the Goodies go to the stockade . The baddies go in search of the treasure . An old pirate called Ben Gunn ( Zion) who has been marooned , arrives and joins the goodies . Jim takes off and sails the ship around the island. The pirates have nowhere to go. There's a big fight. The pirates are winning until they hear Ben Gunn whom they think is a ghost of Captain  Flint. Ben screams horribly..

They all run away and the goodies find the treasure and sail back to England

My favourite part in the show was the scene where Blind Pew gave Billy Bones the black dot.  I liked the way they spoke clearly

                                                        VOLCANOES Deep within the earth,rock is so hot that it melts to become a sticky substance called magma .  When magma is pressurised i is forced up to the earths surface and it pushes through vent and craters. When the two plates push together they sometimes form volcanoes.  This is because the pressure forms cracks and the magma flows  through them. At the centre of the earth is a solid metal core, witch is surrounded by an outer core of liquid metal. Around this is a layer of hot rock called the mantle. The surface is broken up into large pieces called tectonic plates.

OLYMPICS  2012

   

The Olympics were held in London The participants were athletes from all over the world.                                                                               ROCK DA HOUSE                                                                                                     I  THOUGHT... After the show I thought rock da house had gone great and would love to do it again.

The soloists had awesome voices, I liked the songs... Mary had a little lamb, We are the world , Hey soul sister and the song that my brother Jason sang Falling slowly. I think that the audience had a great laugh during the show. I felt fantastic after the show and let out a sigh of relief and happiness.

                                                            

DENTAL HEALTH

What I learned about teeth: I learned that Plaque builds up quickly and damages teeth.

How to care for teeth: I learned that you should brush your teeth and gums after eating.

Good food for teeth: I learned that you should avoid things with a big amount of sugar.

 

Our Environmental Project

We made the signs because we wanted to protect the birds because most eggs got squashed so we wanted to do something about it.
Our part in making sure less eggs got stood on was to make a sign post that said things like... Watch out birds about, Look where you're standing and Keep dogs under control.

We went to the Kumaras to see Sally from D.O.C and to look at our sign post. We learnt about the Godwits and about their long distance flight.

LEONARDO DA VINCI

                                                          

Leonardo Da Vinci was born on April the 15th 1452 till May the 2nd 1519.   He died at 67 years of age. His nationality is Italian ( Tuscany ) some of the paintings he created were... The Last Supper, Lady with Ermine, Madonna Litta and De Mona Lisa.


Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the greatest painters of all times. Not only was he a painter and sculptor he was a great inventor, military engineer, scientist, botanist and mathimatician.




                               Opening of Aniwaniwa

On Monday morning the whole school gathered together for the opening of Aniwaniwa.

First Whaea Tania greeted us and welcomed us with a Karanga.

Next there were alot of speeches by heaps of people... such as builders, Mr Major, the Board chair person and Whaea Sue.

Later on the Whanau sang a song about rainbows while Reverend Gladys blessed the multi purpose room. We all lined up and touched the walls then we sat down to listen again.

Whaea Tania explained why the room is called Aniwaniwa. It reflects our multicultured school.

Finally the ceremony had nearly come to an end but first Whaea Tania got out hr little pot of gold and gave everyone a little treat.
