HOBO STOVES

Yesterday the sixth of March Room 3 made hobo stoves and pikelets.  I was in a  group with Amy.  We made the pikelets and the fires outside MoTEC  and  the pikelets were yummy.  First of all we made our butter in our table groups.  We made   the butter out of cream and salt.

                                                              FLIPPER THE FANTAIL

Fantails ar amazing birds.  They can flit around by using their wings and tail.  They have a beautiful call and also a beautiful maori name.  Their maori name is Piwakawaka.  The fantail is a short living specie and they only live for about three years.  They eat flying insects that get scuffed up by walkers when they are out walking.

                                                                            PORKY THE MOREPORK
The Moreporks maori name is Ruru.  Ruru  is a small brown mottle native owl with large owl eyes.  It is nocturnal,   eating a variety of insects and small animals such as rats, mice and smaller birds.  Ruru is mainly found in forested areas from sea level to the high country.  Ruru has a variety of calls but derives its  common name from the iconic call that sounds like "more-pork".  Ruru is hard to spot  because it is nocturnal hidden in forested areas and possesses early silent flight.

BOOK WEEK
Ready to roll!
Through the Kindergarten

Book week is a cool activity Parklands school does each year.  Becky the librarian at Parklands school organises the event.   Durring the week we had guest readers and also we had drop everything and read for 15 min.  On book day most people dressed up in island clothes because the theme was islands.   The idea of book week is to find a book to do with the theme.  This time there were many books to choose from.

VOLCANOES
Deep within the earth, rock is so hot that it melts to become a sticky substance called magma.  When magma is pressurised it is forced up to the earths surface and pushes up through the vents.  When two plates push together they sometimes form volcanoes.  This is because because pressure forms cracks and the magma flows through them.

                            OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT

Last term Sally from DOC came to talk to us about making signs to protect the godwits on our sandspit to look after them when they get home from Alaska.  Everyone had a special part in making the signs.  I worked with Amy and on our sign we wrote NO MOTORBIKES.  On Monday we went to the Kumaras to unveil our signs and we all had fun.

                                                      Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 to 1519) was an Italian.
He was a brilliant artist, sculptor, inventor, engineer, architect and musician.  The first modern helicopter built in 1939 was inspired by Da Vinci's design for a flying machine.  No other man has ever been born into this world who knows as much as Leonardo said Francois king of France and Leonardo's last patron.

                                               THE ANIWANIWA OPENING

On Monday the 29th it was the opening of Aniwaniwa, the muilti pupose room.  The name Aniwaniwa means rainbow and the name got chosen because of all the different cultures in our school. First of all we got our chairs into a semi circle around Aniwaniwa and then we were greeted by Whaea Tania. Whaea Tania also told us a story about a rainbow. Aniwaniwa got blessed by Reverend Gladys and we followed her around and touched the walls of Aniwaniwa. When we were finished we got food and went to play lunch. It was a great way to open our multi purpose room.
